Level 1 rifle is the strongest weapon in the entire Anthem universe

You've gotta pay your dues in shooter game Anthem. Like Destiny 2 and Warframe, you get ahead with tireless grinding, repeatedly working through the same missions to get your hands on better guns and better loot. So a recently-discovered bug is threatening the entire gameplay. As player YeetLordSurpreme revealed yesterday, the game's level 1 rifle is actually the strongest weapon in the entire Anthem universe -- and developer BioWare has confirmed the whoopsie.

YeetLordSupreme said in their post that their level 1 Defender Rifle - the one you begin the game with - was killing enemies faster than the level 45 Ralner's Blaze rifle. It took only four bullets from the Defender Rifle to kill an enemy, while taking six bullets from the Ralner's Blaze. This is despite the level 45 rifle registering 1,184 hit points per shot versus only 286 from the Defender, suggesting that the actual damage being registered isn't accurate.

Yes, that’s right: the best guns in the game are the ones you start out with, regardless of what damage numbers you’re seeing on the screen. YeetLordSupreme did numerous tests tracking the numbers of bullets required to best foes in the highest levels of Anthem’s endgame portion, using both a level one gun and level 45 masterworked items — supposedly the best available. In some cases, he found the level one guns would drop enemies faster than the level 45 guns. Best and Cheapest Anthem Shard Packs For Sale - Mmocs.com.

Despite the hype and anticipation prior to the game’s release, Anthem has a had a rough launch. Even with several updates and overhauls in response to feedback from the community, the list of problems with BioWare’s latest title just keeps getting longer and longer. It’s getting harder and harder for the fans who actually do enjoy the game to keep enjoying the game, what with glaring bugs like this one. By making the default weapons stronger than any other weapon in the game, Anthem, which belongs to the popular looter-shooter genre, has become utterly pointless. Similar to the gameplay in looter shooters like Destiny 2 and the Borderlands franchise, the point of Anthem is to engage players in intense combat using their equipped weapons and equipment, and then reward those player with rare and powerful gear. If in a game like Anthem, the default weapons are better than any other weapon in the game, what’s the point?

The thread immediately drew the attention of BioWare which responded with a message from technical design director, Brenon Holmes. "We’ll need to investigate this, scaling systems are supposed to allow low level players to play with high level players to be effective against high level enemies. This is not intended, something ain’t right there ...” Holmes said in a comment. This is a problem that BioWare is likely to address sometime in the near future. For now it seems that the best way to play Anthem may be with starting weapons.
